Reportedly, Madurai railway division registered a revenue of Rs 5.10 billion from April-December 2021 period, Rs 2.50 billion more than the revenue generated in the corresponding period of the previous year. The revenue generated includes Rs 2.81 billion in passenger traffic, Rs 1.91 billion in goods traffic and Rs 3.81 billion in other coaching and sundries. The division has loaded 1.76 million tonnes (mt) of cargo till December 2021 as against the previous year’s loading of 1.70 mt. Further, electrification between Madurai and Manamadurai has been completed in 2021-22 and electrification between Tiruchchirappalli-Karaikudi (91.2km), Manamadurai-Ramanathapuram (61km), Palani-Pollachi (62.9km), Kollam-Punalur (45km), Manamadurai-Virudhunagar (66.5km) are expected to be completed by March 2022.
