Construction work on 7 km Thattapparai-Meelavittan section of the Madurai-Maniyachchi-Tuticorin railway line doubling project has been completed. The Commissioner of Railway Safety is expected to inspect the completed section on August 14, 2021.

The project, sanctioned in the Railway Budget 2015-16, involves doubling and electrification of a 158.8 km long rail line between Madurai and Tuticorin via Vanchi and Maniyachchi in Tamil Nadu. It is expected to entail an estimated investment of Rs 11.82 billion.
